Computers are a common thing in the current era. From households to offices, different types of computers are present. Technology has advanced so much that computers are not the same as they were many years ago. Development has brought along new fascinating features like touch screen computers and microchip computers.
Computers help in the day to day activities of human beings making work easier so that we as humans can avoid tasking computations and data processing thereby making the work simpler and free of errors. Despite various disadvantages involved with the use of computers like loss of employment, computers are a necessary evil.
A computer comprises of various parts or components. They all work together in various capacities to get the work done. There are various divisions of the computer components. These are: the Central Processing Unit (CPU), the software, the storage devices, the input devices and the output devices as a whole. All these components interrelate together to perform the required duties.
First and foremost, there is the Central Processing Unit (CPU). This acts as the brain of the whole computer system. It helps to process various commands at a high rate giving specific instructions to the rest of the components. The Central Processing Unit also acts a middle point whereby various components interrelate with each other.
The Central Processing Unit resembles a rectangular structure covered in a metallic structure. Its main composition is the mother board which contains various chips each for specific functions in running of the computer processes like the graphic card or the sound card.
There are the input devices. These help to key in or input data into the computer ready for processing. They come in various types and forms but with the same purpose. There is the mouse which acts as a pointing device. It has two buttons and a wheel for selection and moving purposes. The mouse can be either connected by a wire or could be wireless.
There is also the keyboard. This is an input device used for typing purposes. It contains the alphabet plus a numerical key pad for data entry purposes. In recent advancements, the keyboard has been equipped with backlight assisting in typing in the dark and also switches to turn certain services on or off like turning the Bluetooth or off.
Aside from all that, there is the scanner. This helps in capturing photographic data for further processing in the computer system. It is connected to the computer using a cable and uses an external source of power. Scanners are efficient since they use the photographic memory of a computer.
There is also the voice input. This is whereby the computer captures data from spoken word or from sound then translates it and processes it. This is made possible by the use of a microphone or a mouth piece to capture the data then recorded in the computer memory awaiting commands for any processing.
Output devices also vary in form. There is the monitor. This gives a visual response regarding the input provided. It displays various characters, digits and pictures as per the communication from the Central Processing Unit. The monitors come in different forms; colored or not colored, tft screens or the LCD screens.
Another output device is the printer. Unlike the monitor, this gives hard output. The output is printed on paper to give an indication of the data processed. These printers are connected to the computer system either physically using cables or using wireless means like Bluetooth and wireless network.
Printers vary in type and the way they work. Some use the laser technology to print whereas others use the old dot matrix system. They all offer the same product but the laser printer is fast and cost effective when it comes to ink.
There are also the storage components. First, the Compact Disk (CD) and the DVDs which help in carrying already processed information. The information is burned on the CD or DVD for further viewing. These act as storage agents keeping the information safe for future refer. Other forms of storage are flash disks.
There is also the hard disk. This is fixed into the Central Processing Unit (CPU) and stores crucial data either for further processing or for future reference. The hard disk has a high content capacity ranging from 40 gigabytes to 2 terabytes. Recent developments have seen the introduction of solid state hard disks which are more stable, durable and reliable.
Other components of the computer system are the software. These help in running and interrelating the various hardware comprising the computer system. They include the operating system, the anti-virus and other utility software.
In conclusion, human beings should understand the various functions of these components so as to utilize the full potential of the computer systems thereby making work easier and eventual development for a brighter tomorrow.
